Online physiotherapy

Physiotherapy that meets you where you are.

A clear, honest guide to what remote physiotherapy can and cannot do, how an appointment runs, and how to get the most from it.

Online physiotherapy is a one-to-one video consultation with a chartered physiotherapist. It uses the same clinical reasoning as an in-person appointment: a detailed conversation about your symptoms, observation of how you move, specific tests you perform on camera, and a plan you can follow at home.

What can be assessed by video?

More than most people expect. A thorough history alone points to the likely diagnosis in the majority of musculoskeletal problems. On camera we can then look at:

  • Posture and movement patterns: how you bend, reach, squat, walk, balance or turn your head.
  • Range of motion of the spine, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles.
  • Strength and control through functional tests such as sit-to-stand, single-leg balance, calf raises or step-downs.
  • Provocation tests you can perform safely yourself, guided step by step.
  • Your real environment: the desk, chair, stairs or gym equipment that actually cause the problem.

Who is online physiotherapy suitable for?

It suits most people with back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee or ankle pain, sports and running injuries, recurring flare-ups, and rehabilitation after surgery where the surgeon has approved remote follow-up. It is particularly useful if you travel, work long hours, live rurally, are a carer, or simply want the appointment to fit around real life.

When online care is not appropriateRecent significant trauma, suspected fracture, rapidly worsening weakness or numbness, unexplained weight loss, fever with spinal pain, new bladder or bowel changes, saddle numbness, chest pain or breathlessness need urgent in-person medical assessment. Call 999 in an emergency or NHS 111 for advice.

How an appointment runs

Before

Book a live slot on the website. You receive an email receipt straight away, then a confirmation with your secure video link and a short preparation guide once your physiotherapist has confirmed the time.

During the 45 minutes

  • Around 15 minutes talking through your story, symptoms, goals and health background.
  • Around 15 minutes of guided movement and testing on camera.
  • Around 15 minutes explaining what is likely going on, agreeing a plan and practising the first exercises.

After

You receive a written summary and your exercise programme by email. Follow-up reviews are booked only as needed, typically every one to three weeks at the start.

How to prepare Wear clothing that lets us see the affected area, find about two metres of clear floor space, prop your device at roughly waist height, and have any scan reports or medication lists to hand.

Privacy and safety

Video calls run on an encrypted platform. Your booking form collects only the details needed to manage the appointment; clinical information is taken during the consultation and stored in secure clinical records, not in the website.

For many musculoskeletal problems, outcomes depend far more on an accurate history, a clear plan and consistent exercise than on hands-on treatment. Research on telehealth physiotherapy shows comparable satisfaction and outcomes for a wide range of conditions. Where hands-on assessment is genuinely needed, we will say so.
No. You receive a link by email; one click opens the video call in your browser. We can also talk you through it by phone beforehand.
